Copyright
Last updated 12 October 2026
Posting something you do not have the right to post, including material that infringes somebody's copyright, is against the terms. This page is how a copyright owner asks us to take something down, how a member answers if something of theirs was taken down, and what happens to an account that keeps posting other people's work. It follows the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. 512.
Our copyright agent
312.dev LLC, which publishes scrolly, has designated this agent with the United States Copyright Office to receive notices of claimed infringement.
A notice has to be in writing, so send it by email or by post. The phone line takes messages, and a voicemail is not a notice.

Sending a notice
If you believe something posted in scrolly infringes a copyright you own, or one you are authorized to act for, send our agent a written notice that includes all six of these:
- A physical or electronic signature of a person authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the exclusive right you say is infringed.
- Identification of the copyrighted work you say has been infringed or, if one notice covers several works, a representative list of them.
- Identification of the material you say is infringing and want removed, and information reasonably sufficient for us to find it. scrolly groups are private, so there is often no web address to give: the name of the group, the name of the member who posted it, the date and a description of the post will usually do.
- Information reasonably sufficient for us to contact you, such as an address, a telephone number and, if you have one, an email address.
- A statement that you have a good faith belief that use of the material in the way you are complaining about is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.
- A statement that the information in the notice is accurate and, under penalty of perjury, that you are authorized to act on behalf of the owner of the exclusive right you say is infringed.
When a notice has all six, we remove the post, along with every copy of the same upload the member posted to their other groups, and we tell the member in the app that it was removed because of a copyright notice. We may give the member a copy of the notice, including your name and how to contact you. If a notice is missing something and tells us how to reach you, we write back and say what is missing.
A person who knowingly and materially misrepresents that material is infringing, or that it was removed by mistake, can be liable for the damages that causes, under 17 U.S.C. 512(f).
If something of yours was removed
If a post of yours was removed because of a copyright notice and you believe that was a mistake, or that the wrong material was identified, you can send our agent a counter-notice, in writing, at the address above. It has to include all four of these:
- Your physical or electronic signature.
- Identification of the material that was removed, and where it appeared before it was removed: the group it was posted in and the date you posted it.
- A statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good faith belief that the material was removed as a result of a mistake or a misidentification of the material.
- Your name, address and telephone number, and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the judicial district your address is in or, if your address is outside the United States, for any judicial district in which 312.dev LLC may be found, and that you will accept service of process from the person who sent the notice or from that person's agent.
When a counter-notice has all four, we promptly send a copy of it to the person who sent the notice, and tell them we will put the material back in 10 business days. We then put it back no fewer than 10 and no more than 14 business days after we received the counter-notice, unless our agent first hears from that person that they have filed an action seeking a court order to restrain you from engaging in infringing activity relating to the material on scrolly.
Send a counter-notice within 60 days of the removal. The notice in the app gives the date. We keep a post removed for a copyright notice for at least that long, so there is something to put back, and we keep it for as long as a counter-notice about it is open. "Request a review" in the app is for our own decisions and is not a counter-notice.
Repeat infringers
We close the accounts of members who repeatedly infringe copyright, in appropriate circumstances. This is how we count:
- Each copyright notice that leads us to remove a member's posts is one strike against that member, however many posts or copies it named.
- A strike counts for 12 months from the removal. A strike is taken away if the posts are put back after a counter-notice, or because the notice was withdrawn or was a mistake.
- At the first strike we warn the member. At a second strike within 12 months we suspend the account for 30 days. At a third strike within 12 months we close the account.
- We may close an account sooner when it plainly exists to post other people's work, and we may hold back when a strike plainly rests on a mistake. That judgement is what "in appropriate circumstances" means here.
- A person whose account we closed under this policy may not open another one.
Links to other platforms
Most posts in scrolly are links to a video that lives on another platform. We do not store that video, and the platform hosting it is the one that can take it down. A notice about a link post is still welcome here, under the same rules: we remove the post from scrolly.
