Delete your account

You can delete your Scrolly account from inside the app: Settings, then Delete account. There is no form to fill in and nothing to justify. It asks one question, the one below about your scrollies and comments, and then does it. Nothing waits for a person.

If you cannot get into the app, email us instead and we will do it by hand.

What happens next, if you emailed us

Deleting from the app is immediate, so none of this applies to it. These are the timings for the email route, and they are ones we can actually keep.

1. We confirm we have your request within ten business days. Usually it is the same day, but Scrolly is run by one person, and ten business days is a window that survives a holiday or a week away from a computer.
2. We check the request really came from you. If you wrote from an address we do not recognise, we will ask you to confirm from the one on the account.
3. We do the deletion and write back to tell you it is done, within forty-five days of the request. That is the outer limit and the same one we apply to every other kind of request. Most take a few days.

What we delete

Once you ask, all of this goes:

• Your sign-in identity, which is the record holding your email address and the link to your Apple or Google account.
• Your member profile: your username, your profile picture, and any phone number left on your membership from when Scrolly signed people in by text message.
• Every session, so every signed-in device is signed out and cannot get back in.
• Your notification settings and every push token, so notifications stop.
• Your watch history, your favourites, and your hearts and emoji reactions.
• Your blocks, and any report you filed.
• Any video file you uploaded, and the thumbnail your phone made from it.

Your scrollies and comments, which are not a clean yes or no

Everything above is yours alone, so deleting it affects nobody else. Scrollies and comments are different, because other people built on top of them. Deleting a scrollie you posted also deletes every comment and reaction other members left on it. A comment you left on somebody else's scrollie may be the thing a whole thread is replying to.

So we ask rather than guess. The app asks before it deletes anything, and if you emailed us instead, tell us which you want:

• Delete them. Your scrollies, their files, and your comments go, along with the replies and reactions that were attached to them. If you emailed us and said nothing else, this is what we do.
• Leave them, unattributed. The scrollies and comments stay in the group with your name removed, so the conversations other people had still make sense. Nothing linking them to you survives.

If you do not say, we will ask you before we do anything, and we will not close the request until you have answered. The app will not let you past the question at all.

What deletion cannot reach

• Videos on other platforms. Most of what people post in Scrolly is a link. Deleting the link deletes our record of it, and does nothing at all to the video on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube or wherever it actually lives. That is not ours to delete and never was.
• Anything another member kept. If someone screenshotted or downloaded something of yours, it is on their phone and beyond our reach. We cannot undo that and we will not pretend we can.
• Automated restore points. Our database provider keeps rolling snapshots so we can recover from a failure. A copy of your rows can survive in one of those until it rolls off. We never open a restore point to bring back something somebody asked us to delete, and if we ever have to restore from one, re-applying your deletion is part of the restore.
• Apple and Google. They hold their own record that you used Sign in with Apple or Google. For Apple we end ours as part of the deletion: we ask Apple to revoke the sign-in before anything is deleted, and that works for anybody who has signed in from a recent version of the app. If you signed in long ago and not since, we have nothing left to revoke it with and Apple's grant outlives your account, until you remove it in your Apple ID settings. Google we cannot end for you at all. That one is in your Google Account settings.
• Email we have already exchanged with you. If you wrote to support, that thread sits in a mailbox. Ask and we will delete it too.

Things people get wrong

• Deleting the app does not delete your account. It clears what is on your phone and nothing on the server. Delete the account first, from Settings.
• Leaving a group is not the same as deleting your account. If you want both, say so.
• You do not have to delete your account to remove one thing. Name the scrollie or the comment in an email and we will take it down on its own. Your group's host can also remove any scrollie in the group directly.
